The title of the approved research project is: “3D tumor-stroma models for the investigation of the phenotypic map in colorectal carcinoma”. The project investigates how colorectal cancer cancers and their surrounding cells interact in the tumor microenvironment and where differences exist between individual tumors. In a cell culture model they have developed, they grow “mini intestines”, so-called organoids, in the laboratory and can mimic conditions that are resemble those in patients closely. This funding will enable Dr. Farin to further develop his successful research at the Georg-Speyer-Haus in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt.

The prestigious Heisenberg Program is open to scientists who already meet the requirements to be appointed to a permanent professorship. It enables researchers to continue their own outstanding projects at a location of their choice and to further enhance their scientific reputation, thus preparing themselves for a scientific leadership position in up to five years.
