Hands-on Science: FJN Participants Visit the Georg-Speyer-Haus

How do researchers study individual cells? What are organoids? And what role do animal experiments play in research? On July 8, 2026, more than 30 participants in the Voluntary Social Year in Science, Technology and Sustainability (FJN) organized by ijgd Bundesverein e. V. had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of cancer research at the Georg-Speyer-Haus.

Following an introduction by Ann-Kathrin Mehnert, research group leader Marco Seehawer demonstrated how genetic tools are used in cancer research and how findings from the laboratory can potentially be translated into clinical applications.

Then it was time for the practical part: In small groups, the participants learned the basics of flow cytometry with Stefan Stein. In the museum laboratory, Klaus Cussler provided insights into Paul Ehrlich’s research and the scientific history of the institute. In cell culture, the visitors gained hands-on experience by passaging organoids together with Esther Engel. The program also addressed challenging questions: Bianca Kupper and Franziska Bayer guided the group virtually through the animal facility and discussed the ethical aspects of animal experimentation with the young visitors.

The visit offered a first-hand experience of science as a combination of curiosity, precise work, critical questioning, and social responsibility. And perhaps, along the way, it sparked curiosity in one or more participants about pursuing their own future in research.
