PhD position in the research group of Prof. Dr. Canan Arkan and the DFG-funded consortium SFB/TRR 417.

The Institute of Tumor Biology and Experimental Therapy, Georg-Speyer-Haus, and the Frankfurt Cancer Institute (FCI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our cutting-edge collaborative research center TRR 417 (https://www.trr417.de/), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), to investigate the intricate relationship between diet, microbiome, and cancer. This fully-funded PhD position (3 years, extension possible) focuses on exploring the potential applications of precision nutrition on microbiome by targeting amino acid metabolism during colorectal cancer. Through using clinical samples and precilinical models, the successful candidate will integrate experimental approaches with bioinformatics to unravel novel insights into the dynamic interplay between dietary interventions, microbial community changes, and cancer.

The project

P11 addresses the critical link between diet, microbiome and colorectal cancer with a specific focus on targeting microbial tryptophan-indole metabolism by employing precision nutrition. Using innovative in vitro and in vivo tools, it aims to enhance anti-tumor immunity and treatment efficacy in colorectal cancer. In order to do so, the candidate will investigate host-microbiome interactions in patients and preclinical models, establish and apply tool systems using patient-derived materials, and analyze multi-omics data using bioinformatics tools to disentangle mechanistic links. By collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in oncology, immunology, microbiology, and data sciences within the consortium and research group, discussing progess at yearly Thesis Advisory Committee meetings, presenting findings at local and international conferences, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, the candidate is expected to excel scientifically as an early-career researcher.

Profile

Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, cancer biology, bioinformatics, or related fields.

Technical Skills: Experience in working with preclinical models, microbiome sequencing (16S rRNA or metagenomics), microbial culture systems, flow cytometry, molecular biology and imaging techniques, and bioinformatics analysis.

Additional Competencies: Strong analytical, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, curiosity to learn and follow literature closely, excellent written and oral communication in English.
