Research Technician - Microbiome and Bacterial Cultivation

At the DKTK partner site Frankfurt/Mainz we are looking for a Technical Assistant (m/f/d) for the DKTK Joint Funding Project “BACTORG” in the field of microbiome and bacteria cultivation starting August 2025.

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Research Technician with a background in microbiome research and bacterial cultivation. This role will play a crucial part in supporting our research team by maintaining and culturing bacteria under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, as well as conducting experiments related to microbiome studies. The ideal candidate is passionate about advancing microbiome research and has a strong foundation in laboratory skills related to microbiology and molecular biology.

The work is carried out at the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt, Institute for Tumor Biology and Experimental Therapy. Our aim is to gain a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of tumor development and to find new approaches to cancer therapy.

KEY RESPOSIBILITIES: 

  • Establish and perform bacterial culture maintenance and cultivation, including handling of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, using specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Prepare media, culture reagents, and handle samples with strict adherence to sterile techniques.
  • Assist in the design and execution of microbiome-related experiments, including sample preparation, DNA extraction, and data analysis.
  • Document experimental methods and results thoroughly, ensuring all records are complete, accurate, and compliant with lab protocols.
  • Operate and maintain lab equipment, such as anaerobic chambers, incubators, and autoclaves, ensuring they function efficiently.
  • Collaborate with the research team to interpret experimental results and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment in line with safety and quality control standards.

YOUR ProfilE:

  • Completed training as a TA, BTA, MTA, CTA or biology laboratory technician with relevant professional experience or comparable training and/or comparable knowledge.
  • 2+ years of laboratory experience with a strong emphasis on microbiome research or bacterial cultivation.
  • Proficiency in cultivating bacteria under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
  • Experience in sterile techniques and standard microbiology practices.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in documentation and experimental procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the English language
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction, and sequencing.
  • Familiarity with anaerobic chambers and techniques specific to microbiome research.
